At 8 weeks of age to 14 weeks feed your puppy 4 times a day reducing
this to 3x at 12 to 16 wks. On the food that the breeder of your
puppy has recommended.
Make sure he has plenty of milk to help build up strong bones and
teeth. At 14 to 16 weeks cut his food down to three times a day
still giving him his daily milk. At approx 6 months he should be
down to two meals a day, one in the morning and one in the evening.
This should be his daily allowance through his adult life. He will
also enjoy Rawhide chews this will help to keep his teeth clean and
also help when his adult teeth come through at approx 4 to 6 months
of age. His first set of teeth is his baby teeth.
He will also enjoy doggie biscuits for snacks, NEVER EVER GIVE HIM
HUMAN CHOCOLATE, as this is very toxic to dogs.
Veterinary:
The puppy should have his first inoculations at approx 9 weeks and
his second injections at 12 weeks, your vet will advice you to keep
him in for a further week to make the inoculations have time to work. Then its out into the big wide world when you feel he is ready. Remember he has been a baby up until now.
He was wormed at 6 weeks and 8 weeks of age please consult you’re your
vet as to when his further treatments are necessary. Always make
sure his claws are kept cut, if you cannot manage it I am sure your
vet will oblige.
Daily care;
Always check both ends of your lhasa puppy daily.. Start by gently
cleaning around the eyes with some warm water and cotton wool balls.
Making sure no gunky stuff is left; it can irritate the eyes, cause
staining of he coat and most noxious of all smell rather unpleasant
if left on.
Clean teeth with a canine toothpaste and small baby toothbrush two or
three times a week, start by using your finger as this will get him
used to something in his mouth and the toothpaste before you introduce
the brush. NEVER use a human toothpaste as they will swallow it,
again it is TOXIC.
Check the bottom area daily as it can so easily clog up and cause
great discomfort to your puppy and soreness. If it is left he will
be unable to pass his stools and could become very ill.
For general grooming use a metal medium/wide toothed comb, a small
comb with narrow teeth, the latter for face grooming. Preferably use
a pure bristle brush with soft cushioning, or you may prefer to keep
your lhasa ‘s coat trimmed which ever you choose keep on top of it
as their coats will matt up if left unattended. Usually a bath every
week or two, or when they get dirty is sufficient. Always use a good
insecticide shampoo, as this will discourage any visitors that might
wont to hop on for a ride. Finish by using a good conditioner; always
rinse the coat thoroughly as if any shampoo is left in the coat it can
cause them to scratch. Make sure the are thoroughly dry with a hand
dryer before they go outside. Again use a good insecticides usually
obtained from your vet. I have used Frontline on my dogs for years
and it protects the extremely well.
General Hints And Tips.
Remember your puppy is a baby when you get him, he will eat, play,
with large periods spent sleeping. Just like a human baby. Always
keep him warm, leave the radio on for him if you are not there as
the sound does comfort him. Never let him jump from a chair or
similar until he is able to jump up himself, as an awkward fall
could cause a broken leg or worse. Always keep a tight hold of
him when you pick him up as he gets stronger he will wriggle like
mad, and could fall from a great height, which is very dangerous.
Also be very careful with garden ponds. As these can prove fatal. On
a lighter note, hopefully he will use newspaper to do his toilets,
but if you take him outside every time he wakes up it will get him
used to going outside for this purpose, at this early age don’t leave
him unattended out there.
I hope I have covered every area of questions you may have had,
all I can say good luck, and I hope he brings you many years of
happiness. Oh yes one last thing he LOVES all safe toys to play with.
